Portugal Golf
If you’re looking to combine beautiful golf courses with delicious food, good weather and some culture or relaxing by the beach after golf, Portugal might be the golf destination for you.
The southern Algarve region of Portugal has long been known as a top golf destination for European golfers and it’s easy to tell why. The Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Vilamoura area is often referred to as the golden triangle for the high number of golf courses and Michelin star restaurants in close proximity of each other.
Typical golf trips to Portugal combine the best courses in the Lisbon area with the top courses in the Algarve although there is plenty of good golf to be played in either area to fill an itinerary.
Algarve:
With over 20 highly rated courses stretching along the Algarve’s 100-mile southern coastline, there is plenty to choose from. From Sir Henry Cotton’s earlier designs from the mid-60s to Jack Nicklaus’ 2007 design, Monte Rei, golf in the Algarve offers a variety of parkland courses that are often lined with pine trees and boast frequent ocean views.
Lisbon Area:
There are numerous great golf courses to be played within an hour’s drive from the Portuguese capital. Just west of the city you’ll find Oitavos Dunes Golf Club, the number one ranked course in Portugal and ranked #55 in the world by Golf Magazine, as well as the luxury golf resort Penha Longa. About an hour and a half up the coast, but well worth the drive, lays the fairly new West Cliffs. Built in 2017, West Cliffs has rapidly made a name for itself, ranking amongst the top courses in the country.
