In 1893 Ballybunion GC, one of the finest links courses in the world, was opened and available for play. Stretching along the stunning County Kerry coastline, the Ballybunion Old Course hugs the sea and flows up the spectacular dunes. Moreover, the Old Course at Ballybunion is a “must play” on any Ireland golf tour.
In 1927 Tom Simpson redesigned and extended the course. It remained virtually untouched until member Tom Watson oversaw some additional modifications of what he called “the best course in the world”.
Today, Ballybunion Old is generally recognized as the top course in the Republic of Ireland.
Caddies are almost a necessity to help navigate the dunes of Ballybunion and maximize your enjoyment of the links. Also, remember your camera because you’ll want to capture the memories of the graveyard along the first fairway, the spectacular vista from behind the 11th tee, and the epic challenge which awaits you at the 17th hole.
Adjacent to the Old Course is the Cashen Course which opened in 1984. Robert Trent Jones’ original design, this course is known to frustrate golfers of all skill levels but most are up for the daunting challenge! Often they together make for a very enjoyable 36 hole day.
