We are consistently asked if there’s any whisky distilleries near the town of St. Andrews that folks can easily visit and tour. The answer has always been “not really”. The three distilleries we usually recommend are all over an hour and fifteen minutes away (Tullibardine, Edradour, and Glenturret (The Famous Grouse). All are absolutely worth the drive. And please make no bones about it – there’s no shortage of whisky flowing in the town of St. Andrews. But it’s not made there, only drank.
On December 1, 2014 a brand new distillery opened up in the nearby town of Kingsbarns (of Kingsbarns Championship Golf Course fame). Now there’s a distillery only fifteen minutes from the town of St. Andrews. Their single malt scotch whisky is admittedly brand new, and according to the Scotch Whisky association rules they have to wait at least three years before they can legally bottle it. But if you were to visit the distillery rest assure you’ll be offered the opportunity to sample their ‘work in progress’ as well as sample plenty of their blends, and some other individual casks. There’ll be no shortage. Bottles are also for sale in their visitor center.
We trust visiting this new distillery would be an enjoyable way to spend a few hours while in St. Andrews. Here’s their website: http://www.kingsbarnsdistillery.com/
